Let’s face it, after Larry Clark’s Kids [1995] pretty much every film that has involved skateboarding has been extremely corny. You’d think that someone would have been able to nail it at some point within the past 20 years. While that hasn’t happened just yet, Jonah Hill’s directorial debut titled mid90s looks promising. Co-produced by Illegal Civ’s Mikey Alfred and staring Fucking Awesome’s Na-Kel Smith alongside IC cohorts Olan Prenatt and Ryder McGloughin, the film follows 13-year-old Stevie played by Sunny Suljic through his summer spent navigating a troubled home life and the world that he discovered through a group of skaters he meets at a shop. Set in Hill’s old stomping grounds of West Los Angeles, mid90s is looking like a period piece that will actually do the culture justice. Have a look at the trailer above and judge for yourself.
