Sage Elsesser Talks Rehab Stint in Pitchfork Interview

If Song of Sage sounds spiritual to you, it’s like due to Navy’s state of mind while recording it. In a new interview with Pitchfork, the F.A. pro turned master lyricist reveals that the album was  finished after a stint in rehab. It’s almost a cautionary tale considering N.Y. just legalized recreational cannabis today.

Leading up to the recording of the album, a combination of depression, panic attacks, and co-dependency on weed broke his spirit. “I have an incredible Black psychiatrist and he suggested rehab,” Elsesser says. “I kind of shrugged it off at first, but I sat with it and ended up taking his advice.” He completed Song of Sage after his stint in the rehab facility.
