Tony Hawk's First Trading Card Breaks Skateboarding Record

Tony Hawk’s 1990 Sports Illustrated for Kids rookie card sold for $15,000 Thursday night in PWCC’s Premier Auction to become the highest-selling skateboarding trading card.

This sale also more than doubles Hawk’s previous record of $6,600 in 2021.

Hawk’s rookie card was part of a Sports Illustrated for Kids issue in May 1990, alongside other athletes like Mark McGwire, Reggie Miller, and Boris Becker.

To remove the cards from the magazine page, subscribers had to tear them out along the pre-perforated edges, which unfortunately made it difficult to keep the cards in good condition.

PSA graded this card a Gem Mint 10, meaning it was removed perfectly from its sheet. It is one of only three examples ever to earn PSA’s top grade.
