How Salaam Remi Made the Beat for Nas’ “Made You Look”

In 2002, Nas had just finished his legendary feud with Jay-Z, and was at odds with New York radio. In the midst of all of the drama, the Queens MC decided to address the situation on wax, and enlisted Salaam Remi to produce the beat. Remi slowed down Incredible Bongo Band’s “Apache” to create the loop for “Made You Look.” The result was one of Nas’ most celebrated classics, which would become forever intertwined with skateboarding a year later via Paul Rodriguez’s Yeah Right part. How 35th North Skate Shop Came to Be

Seeing all the other shops back then were focused on snowboards, Tony Croghan saw the opportunity to establish a shop dedicated to skateboards. He used earnings from a hotel job to start 35th North Skate Shop in Seattle.

After twenty years, 35th North has become a prominent part of the Seattle community, hosting events, art shows, premieres, and karaoke nights.

Pro skaters Matt Gottwig and Kristin Ebeling shared more stories about how the shop became an integral part of the local skate scene in this episode of “Established“.
