When we think of iconic skate mags, Thrasher, Transworld, and Big Brother come to mind. Unfortunately, the archetype for all of these publications is often overlooked. In terms of photography, art direction, and editorial voice, Skateboarder paved the way for everything that would come after it by creating a unique formula that formed the foundation of what all skate media is built on. Rick Charnoski and Buddy Nichols’ documentary on the original incarnation of the magazine tells its stories through voices ranging from Christian Hosoi and Lance Mountain to Glen E. Friedman and Craig Stecyk. It’s a valuable history lesson that every skater should be familiar with. Watch The Original Skateboarder documentary in its entirely above. And if you’d like to dig deeper, the entire Skateboarder archive is available for viewing on the Transworld site.
