Eli Gesner Interviews Roger Gastman About the History of Street Art

Roger Gastman is the guy behind While You Were Sleeping. Founded in 1997 when Gastman was only 19, WYWS was graffiti’s version of Big Brother. It featured articles on failed child stars, admirable serial killers, and porn stars while showcasing the best graffiti writers of the era including: ESPO, Banksy, Shepard Fairey, and more. Today, Gastman is the curator of Los Angeles’ Beyond The Streets exhibition which is the self-proclaimed biggest street art show ever.  Gesner, who was the designer behind SHUT and Zoo York, has an interesting perspective on it all, and delivers a highly informative interview with Gastman above. Seeing all the other shops back then were focused on snowboards, Tony Croghan saw the opportunity to establish a shop dedicated to skateboards. He used earnings from a hotel job to start 35th North Skate Shop in Seattle.

After twenty years, 35th North has become a prominent part of the Seattle community, hosting events, art shows, premieres, and karaoke nights.
